Baljit says he can now identify colours

NEW DELHI: Injured Indian hockey goalkeeper Baljit Singh on Tuesday said he can now identify colours after undergoing laser treatment to his
Baljit
right eye, which was injured during a practice session in Pune.

"I met him (Dr Morris) yesterday. He did laser on my operated eye. As for the progress, now I am able to see images and colours. I could identify orange colour, red and green," Baljit said from Alabama, USA.

Baljit, who had damaged his right eye while training with a golf ball in July, said the doctor has sealed his retina by laser but it would still take some time to fathom the percentage of improvement.

"Laser was done to treat the retina and seal the retina. Doctor says that there has been progressive improvement. However, it will take some more time to analyse the percentage of vision," the hockey player said.

Baljit's close friend and Indian Oil Corporation clubmate Inderjit Chadda, who accompanied the player's father to Alabama, said the next meeting with the doctor is scheduled on next Monday.

"Baljit is happy about the progress in his vision. Last week he was seeing objects like shadows. After laser treatment yesterday, he is able to see images and also identify colours. God willing, Baljit will fulfill his dream of playing in the World Cup in Delhi."

NEW DELHI: Dempo Sports Club began the Durand Cup in style. The 4-1 victory against Air India in Group III of the tournament was just the start the well-equipped team would have planned. It was Air India’s first defeat in two matches.

In the other match, Lajong FC, Shillong and defending champion Mahindra United split points from a goalless draw in Group IV.

Dempo, winner in 2006, was clearly the better side in a match that lacked intensity befitting the occasion. A 29th-minute goal, a header by Peter Carvalho off a corner, was the only noteworthy piece of action in the first session.

In the second, Ranty Martins made the most of a goalmouth scramble and slotted in an opportunist goal in the 60th and the third came from a penalty conversion by Sunil Chetri eight minutes later.

Roberto Mendis Silva completed the tally by curling in a free kick in the 89th minute. Air India managed one through N.D. Opara. moments after Silva’s strike.

Dempo will play Army XI in the group decider on September 17.

Boithang Hoakip had every reason to be dejected because he did everything right except score for Lajong FC. Mahindra’s crafty right midfielder Steven Dias was also disappointed too as his planned openings could not alter the course of the contest.

Hoakip hustled Mahindra right through but the Player of the Match was Daniel Bademi. The lanky player controlled the midfield tirelessly and his hard work kept Lajong optimistic against the much-fancied opposition. Bademi’s ball distribution was exemplary but then his team lacked a good finisher.

After being pounded by the Mahindra forwards in the initial stages, Lajong should have scored early on resumption. A curling right-footer from outside the box by Hoakip was goal-bound when Subhasish Roy Choudhy brought off a grand save by fisting the ball on his right.
Chance wasted

The Hoakip attempt was the motivation for his team. The energetic Niwan Gatphoh worked hard and once broke into the Mahindra box. He had caught the defence napping and was ideally placed to take a meaningful strike but all he managed was a hurried shot from the small box. Mahindra heaved a sigh of relief.

There was action in front of the Lajong goal as Mahindra reacted strongly. Barring a header from Mohammad Rafi, it had little to pat itself for. It was in contrast to the breezy beginning when Paresh Shivalkar hit the post and next failed to beat goalkeeper Gumpe Rime’s anticipation. There was a rasping 35-yarder by Dias but Sushil Singh failed to finish the rebound. The session ended with a free kick by Hoakip narrowly going past the post.

A fairytale finish to Clijsters’s fantastic run

SUPER MOM: Kim Clijsters and daughter Jada had a delightful time at Flushing Meadows after the Belgian’s trophy triumph on Sunday.
NEW YORK: With the silver trophy tucked under one arm and cradling her daughter Jada in the other, Kim Clijsters provided a huge lift for working mothers around the world as she was crowned U.S. Open champion on Sunday.

Never before had a curly haired, blonde, 18-month-old toddler stolen the show on Arthur Ashe Stadium, but this was no ordinary day at Flushing Meadows.

It was a day when Belgian wildcard Clijsters beat Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3 to become the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong achieved the feat almost three decades ago — at Wimbledon in 1980.

“We tried to plan her naptime a little bit later so she could be here today. It’s the greatest feeling in the world — being a mother,” a glassy-eyed Clijsters told the cheering crowd after her heart-tugging comeback win at the hard court Major.

Wozniacki, who was trying to become the first Danish woman to win a Grand Slam singles title, said: “She’s such a great girl. Unfortunately, she beat me today. She played a great match and deserved this trophy.”

A journey that began with the Belgian taking baby steps back into top flight tennis only last month — following a two-year sabbatical — came a full circle in just 35 days as she claimed her second U.S. Open prize.
Great story

“Amazing. For her to have this incredible run is fantastic. This is a great story for women’s tennis, that’s for sure,” said Federer, who, as the new father of twins, will try to prove that dads too can rule the world when he takes on Juan Martin del Potro in the men’s final on Monday.

World No. 1 Federer relied on a touch of magic to make sure he was still on target to set a modern era record of winning six successive Open titles.

The Swiss top seed, with his back turned to the net, conjured an eye-catching crosscourt winner from between his legs to bring up matchpoint as he beat Novak Djokovic 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-5.

Federer took the first set tiebreaker 7-3 by winning five of the last six points.

The second set was decided by a service break in the last game when the 28-year-old Swiss cashed in on his third setpoint with a forehand winner. Another forehand return winner ended the two-hour-34-minute match.

Today's century is one of my best: Tendulkar

COLOMBO: Batting ace Sachin Tendulkar rates his opportune century, which laid the foundation of India's tri-series win over Sri Lanka, as one of
his best.

With his masterly 138, his 44th ODI hundred, Tendulkar guided India to a massive 319 for five and Sri Lanka fell 46-run shy in their chase.

"This is one of my best innings. I will rate this up considering the conditions and the ground, the humidity," said Tendulkar, who was declared both Man of the Match and Man of the Series for his stupendous show with bat in the tournament.
